by Beatriz Gill When I was a little girl, I would spend hours in the mirror practicing being crowned Miss Universe after every broadcast of the pageant. I practiced the surprised look (“Meeee?” I’d squeal); I’d bend my knees ever so slightly so that the outgoing queen could place the crown on my head, and then I'd practice my moment at the end of the runway, waving ‘properly’ (wrist, wrist, elbow, elbow). Little did I know that this inspiring moment I’d rehearsed so often would become the least important part of a queen's year. I would also come to realize after my own crowning at a local pageant, that it was also the least character-building. It turns out that the myriad of public appearances a titleholder can make... ranging from the ultra-glamorous events to the charitable work appearances and all the online presentations in between... not only become the backbone of her reign but also become the most memorable. I would probably have difficulty persuading an up-and-coming beauty queen from thinking that the glamorous events are the most incredible ones she will attend. Whether it's appearing at another pageant, being invited to a studio to film a TV segment, or riding in a parade, these events allow us to dress up in stylish outfits, full makeup, and sparkling regalia. Most titleholders make every effort to look their very best, just like they did on the day they were crowned. These appearances are very visible and very necessary. They allow us to reach different parts of the population at large and therefore influence different audiences including the target market that might enter your director's pageant next year. The best part is that they are usually very exciting... someone is being crowned, or you get to be on TV, or you get to sit back and enjoy the magic that is a parade. Either way, these kinds of events should become a very important part of your year… but certainly not the only part. Another type of appearance, the charitable or community event, is my personal favorite. Whether it's raising money at a fundraiser, speaking at a school or community event, or ladling soup at a food pantry, these are the events that make a real difference in your community and bring great power to your crown. You usually don't get to dress up for these... but savvy titleholders have t-shirts made that identify their titles and still promote their organization. I find these events to be the most rewarding. All of my favorite appearances as Mrs. America's United States this past year were "in the trenches" raising funds or food items in drives, cooking for veterans on Thanksgiving, and packing Christmas boxes for hundreds of at-risk children during the holidays. These events have become the cornerstone of my year of service to the AUS pageant, and I've become a better person for it. The final kind of appearance that I'd like to analyze today is the online video event. These are great because they can be planned and executed from the comfort of your home. They also allow you to get as dressed up or as casual as you want. You can even provide the direct contact information of your pageant organization. I have personally put together online fundraiser giveaways for charity, filmed informational videos for non-profit campaigns, and even provided incoming contestants for the AUS system video tips designed to help them prepare for Nationals. While these appearances require personal effort and imagination, they help titleholders and the pageant organization they represent to reach a target audience that, according to Forbes magazine, spends 91% of the time with their cell phones within arm’s reach. My sincere hope is that each titleholder reading this article will find a way to incorporate these types of appearances into their year of service. I promise they will make their year far more memorable. Speaking of memories...as I practiced being crowned Miss Universe at the tender age of six, I could never have imagined that the true excitement behind the crown would be found in taking off the crown and getting my hands dirty. By participating in unique events such as magical sea turtle releases off the shores of Oahu or reading to children while dressed up in the leather garb of crime-fighting librarian Batgirl on a hot day, I have discovered that there truly is a power behind the crown. It comes from the visible and active woman wearing it. Beatriz Gill is a mother of two adult children and has been married for 27 years. She has a degree in Sociology and is working on a second degree in Psychology. Beatriz lives in Hawaii and represented the state when she was crowned Mrs. America’s United States 2021. If you would like to learn more about this system, please visit www.americasunitedstatespageant.com Photo 1: From the moment I was crowned, I was ready to hit the ground running because I had already created a marketing plan of appearances but incorporated glamorous events, charitable and community work, and online video presentations. Photo 2: At the Honolulu Comicon Beatriz read to and with children as Batgirl. Batgirl is the alter ego of Barbara Gordon who is a librarian in the DC comic universe. Photo 3: Beatriz joined Hawaii's Lieutenant Governor Josh Green to feed over 500 veterans and their families this past Thanksgiving. Photo 4: Beatriz, with the help of some amazing friends, not only raised money and items but packaged and delivered 400 Christmas shoe boxes to the One Love Ministries of Kailua.

In Pageant Systems
America's United States Pageant Each year, thousands of young girls and women compete in pageants. This August 11-13, 2022 at the Stanly County Civic Center in Albemarle NC, the America's United States National Pageant will proudly crown 7 young ladies and women and provide them with the opportunity to use the one-of -a- kind AUS Pearls of Wisdom Crown to make a difference in their communities. AUS emphasizes skill building, poise, and personal growth of all its contestants. Delegates who become part of the America's United States Pageant gain confidence and poise in an increasingly competitive world. The pageant gives each candidate the opportunity to grow and advance her personal dreams and volunteer goals, while acting as a role model in her community. To compete for their respective titles, delegates interview with the judges, and model their evening gown as well as an on-stage question for the Top 5. Depending on the division, the delegates will also compete on state in: Jr Miss in fun fashion wear; Teen in fitness / athletic wear; Miss in swimsuit OR fitness/ athletic wear; Mrs. in fitness / athletic wear OR resort wear. "Pageants have been moving away from swimwear over the last few years, and it is something we at AUS have taken note of," noted creators Tava Cook and Connie Thomas. "We opted to give the option for our Mrs. delegates to compete in resort wear which offers a variety of clothing choices and also allows the women to capture the feeling of being on holiday." The National Pageant offers winners a cash prize along with an amazing prize package to assist them during their reign The staff at America's United States believes in creating "crowns with opportunities" and encouraging their titleholders to be positive forces in their communities and across the United States. The AUS Crown, also known as the Pearls of Wisdom, has become a symbol of the principles each queen should stand for: 1) Be Passionate about giving back 2) Be Personable as a Queen 3) Be Positive as a Role Model 4) Be Pivotal to your Sister Queens' Success 5) Be Powerful in helping TMC Productions grow.
